Akiko Spencer - Blight Rayner

My role is essentially attention to detail. I am fastidious about how components and materials come together, in part to facilitate buildability and durability, and in part to enrich experience of the element that derives from well-considered detail design.

Senior Designer

Akiko Spencer is a registered architect in Japan and one of our most experienced design development and documentation practitioners.

Akiko began her career in Sydney in the office of Conybeare Morrison & Partners in 2002. She then joined Jayson Blight and Michael Rayner at Cox Rayner Architects where she worked for fifteen years on many commercial, residential, educational and sports projects. Some of her major projects are the Mosaic apartment building in Fortitude Valley, Allisee residential village on the Gold Coast and the Singapore Management University Headquarters.

Akiko joined Blight Rayner Architecture in 2018 and has been a mainstay of our design development and documentation team over the past eight years. Her commercial projects include the 360 Queen Street office tower and the refurbishment of 260 Queen Street in Brisbane CBD. Educational projects include the Western Sydney University Engineering Innovation Hub in Sydney’s Parramatta, The Marian STEM Centre at Brigidine College in Brisbane, and St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School additions. Sports projects include the National Rugby Training Centre at Ballymore and St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School Sports Precinct, and cultural projects include the Glasshouse Theatre at South Bank.

Akiko is a mentor on design detailing to many of our younger staff. She is also involved in our philanthropic projects such as the Jinndii Waijung housing at Yarrabilba for victims of domestic violence.
