Jubilee Hotel Revitalisation

Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, 2018-2022

This project followed on from our design for the adjoining Jubilee Place office building which partly oversails the historic Jubilee Hotel building. The overall project gave us the ability to interconnect both a beer garden extension to the hotel and the office building’s podium levels.

The restoration of the heritage-listed hotel was guided by heritage architect Ivan McDonald, together with the interface between new and old.

The beer garden pavilion is designed to reflect the diagrid structure of the office building and the fenestration rhythm of the hotel. The diagonal façade houses a series of seating booths and floods the space with daylight in combination with glazed sawtooth roofing.

The space comprises multiple levels – a ground floor beer hall for large gatherings, and mezzanines and balconies for smaller occupancy.

The idea of the space is that it feels as much like an outdoor space as possible – a city ‘room’ or courtyard – but with full weather protection. The cantilever of the office building enables the space to be open to the elements and naturally ventilated.
