JAYSON + MICHAEL’S HISTORY BEFORE BLIGHT RAYNER

Anna Meares Velodrome

Chandler, Brisbane, 2013-16

Designed for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and as a multi-sports venue beyond, the velodrome is naturally ventilated – unusual for such a facility dependent upon internal temperature control. This requirement led to a concept of building a ‘brise soleil’ hovering over its landscape setting. It is clad in PTFE fabric, enabling a sculptural expression undulating synergistically with the track geometry. The canopy ‘floats’ above a base of folded landscape that forms banking for an adjoining BMX track and event spaces around the velodrome.
