Blight Rayner Architecture was formed in Brisbane by Jayson Blight and Michael Rayner, both former principal directors of a renowned national practice.
Our purpose was to run a different kind of practice, one where the directors are continuously ‘hands-on’ in design and production rather than managers and overseers of an extensive range of projects.
We wanted, however, to be capable of not only small to medium projects but large, complex ones as these had characterised our careers to date and we have long demonstrated our capability to resolve challenging problems.
We settled on our preferred capacity of under 40 staff which, assuming strong diversity, we believe is ideal to resolve any type and scale of project while maintaining the atmosphere of a cohesive ‘family’.
This strategy has proved successful, drawing our staff partly from our former office and partly from architects, urban designers, and graduates who sought to join a firm such as ours.
Our aim is to consider and resolve every aspect of architecture – its social and physical context, its brief, its technological and economic challenges, and contribute to the betterment of the world in response to climate change and cultural inclusivity, especially of First Nations Peoples.
Our joy is in making every material, detail and connection contribute to the solution, enhancing experience at each moment and place.
In 2020, we opened our Sydney office and look forward to it growing in a way that continues our ethos.
