Sophie Briggs

Architectural Graduate
BArch, MArch (UQ)

Sophie Briggs was the top student in the Master of Architecture final semester Design Studio run by Michael Rayner at the University of Queensland in 2016. She was also awarded the Dean’s Commendation for High Achievement in her final year.

Despite being a recent graduate, Sophie has gained extensive experience during her study years, firstly at Populous (2012) and then at Brand + Slater Architects where she contributed design and/or documentation to the following projects:

  • Montague Hotel, West End, Brisbane
  • Sunnybank Performing Arts and Community Centre
  • Anglican Church of Grammar School Centenary Library
  • Fraser College Anglican College Master Plan
  • Greenbank RSL Club and Function Centre

Sophie has been selected to represent the University of Queensland for the Bluescope Glenn Murcutt Student Prize in 2017. Her submitted project is an adaptive reuse for an existing heritage-listed building.

I love exploring the use of light and shadow to define forms, spaces and textures. Materials are a constant, but I enjoy amplifying their ethereal qualities through the endlessly changing play of light.
